▼ Detailed Profile ▼
Barbara is an American citizen. After many years of being passionately interested in jewellery and gemstones as a hobby, in 1983 she persuaded a local long established and renowned high end jeweller with three branches to take her on, initially part time and without pay, in order that she could learn ‘everything there was to know about jewellery, gemstones and diamonds’.

From 1983, Barbara embarked upon a tireless course of gemmological and appraisal education, qualifying as a GIA Graduate Gemologist and eventually achieving the coveted AGA (Accredited Gemologists Association) Certificate of Achievement for Master Gemologist Appraiser, a qualification that is held by less than two hundred jewellery appraisers in the States. Barbara progressed to diamond buyer and senior jewellery appraiser for all three branches. She then served as Education Chair to AGA, a post she held for two years.

Barbara re-located to the UK in 1994 and re-launched her career as a Senior Consultant Valuer & Training Officer to a leading Cambridge jewellery retailer. As well as undertaking valuations, here she was responsible for fifteen staff, teaching them gemstone identification and American methodology in coloured gemstone grading and valuation science.

1995 and 1996 were incredibly industrious years for Barbara. Together with an associate valuer, Peter Buckie, who later became her husband, she co-founded VALUGEM, innovators of specialist documents, stationery, valuation systems and various aids for the professional jewellery appraiser. She then co-founded and became one of the principal lecturers in the highly acclaimed APPRAISAL 2000 Master Class Programme offering educational seminars to the trade, including students and aspiring valuers.

In 1998, Barbara became an independent associate appraiser for the London Jewellery Valuers Company operating from offices in Cambridge & London, undertaking valuations for private clients and the high end jewellery trade, including Garrard the Crown Jeweller, where she and her fiancé, Peter, were affectionately known as ‘the dream team’. Together, they also became consultant valuers to Asprey London, Christie’s Auctioneers and other prominent London and Provincial retail jewellers.

In 1999, Barbara helped her husband to co-found JEMS (Jewellery Evaluation & Mediation Services), a small independent consultancy of specialist professional appraisers. However, later that year she was head-hunted by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to establish and found their Learning Center in London and act as its Education Coordinator – a challenging task that Barbara eagerly accepted.

After successfully completing the job of establishing GIA London, in 2003, Barbara reverted to her role of independent appraiser and actively joined Peter in operating JEMS, where she has remained ever since. Apart from providing numerous high value valuations in her own right, Barbara and Peter often work on assignments together and they have completed valuations on an impressive number of important comprehensive jewellery collections belonging to celebrated clients, both in the UK and overseas.  Some of these collections have totalled several GB£million sterling, respectively.  One noteworthy collection, belonging to a Middle Eastern royal family member, comprised approximately 150 unique pieces, the total value of which exceeded US$250million.

Barbara is a CAT Advisor, tutoring aspiring valuers in the concepts, principals & methodologies recommended by the Institute of Registered Valuers in its appraisal theory education programme, which participants must pass as a pre-requisite for application to the Institute for membership.

Despite establishing herself as a frighteningly accomplished appraiser, in her own words, she still maintains ‘I can never learn enough about jewellery, gemstones and diamonds’, which is, the reader will recall, where she came in!
