▼ Detailed Profile ▼
Peter’s long and passionate love affair with jewellery, gems and diamonds, started in earnest just over fify-five six years ago when he entered the Mayfair retail jewellery world. He started from the bottom up as a junior and eventually achieved the status of manager and senior valuer.

In 1973, Peter re-located to Cambridge where he opened his own shop and another followed in 1979. It was here that Peter first offered his ‘Visiting Valuer Service’, whereby the valuation was carried out in the client’s home.

Peter was one of the first jewellers to achieve the status of National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG) Registered Valuer, whereupon his ability, dynamism and commitment to excellence was immediately recognised and he was invited to join the Association’s Valuations Committee in early 1989. In 1991, Peter was elected Vice Chairman of that Committee and in September 1994 he became its Chairman, a post he held for three years.

In 2008, NAG launched the Institute of Registered Valuers and in recognition of his outstanding skill, dedication and service in respect of jewellery appraisal and valuation, Peter became the first recipient of the Institute's David Wilkins 'VALUER OF THE YEAR' Award and he was subsequently elected a Fellow of the Institute. He then acted as a consultant to the Institute, becoming one of its six person Registration and Monitoring Panel.  This Panel is responsible for scrutinising all applicants’ valuation work prior to acceptance to the Institute and for monitoring all Members’/Fellows’ sample valuations mandatorily submitted to the Institute every five years in order to retain their status and gain CPD points. In 2012, the Institute commissioned Peter to be the principal contributor to its new Certificate of Appraisal Theory (CAT) educational programme for aspiring valuers, the passing of which subsequently became a pre-requisite for entry into the Institute. Very regrettably, for personal reasons and professional divergence, Peter resigned his Fellowship of the Institute in December 2019. He is now a Fellow of the Jewellery Valuers Association, a newly formed and totally independent organisation and he has re-joined five of his former colleagues, who also resigned from the IRV, as a member of the Association’s Registration and Monitoring Panel.

He is a former consultant valuer to Garrard the Crown Jeweller, to Asprey of Bond Street and to Christie’s. Peter is an officially appointed jewellery, gems, diamond and watch valuer to HM Revenue & Customs and he is generally regarded as one of the UK’s leading independent jewellery and gems valuers. He is member of many scientific and professional associations, including the Society of Expert Witnesses.

In 1999, Peter, together with his wife, Barbara Leal, a fellow jewellery appraiser, co-founded JEMS (Jewellery Evaluation & Mediation Services). Peter is proud to maintain that no job is too big or too small and the JEMS private client database comprises people from all walks of life, as well as boasting the rich and the famous, including celebrities of stage and screen, together with models, pop stars, affluent city bankers and brokers, politicians and other eminent public figures.

Whilst the majority of Peter’s activities involve working in the UK, he is often commissioned to undertake various high net worth assignments overseas and these have included noteworthy valuations of important jewellery collections and gems in America and Europe, as well as the Middle East and Far East.

His ‘jewel in the crown’ is that in 2007 he was commissioned by an overseas client to undertake THE VALUATION OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST ‘PERFECT’ DIAMONDS, weighing in at well over 200 carats (the average size of a gent’s sports wristwatch) and being of the very finest colour and clarity (D/IF). Obviously, the valuation itself is strictly confidential and the owner of the diamond does not wish its value to become public knowledge, however, he is happy for Peter to disclose that it was many tens of millions of US dollars.

Peter and Barbara have completed valuations on an impressive number of important comprehensive jewellery collections belonging to celebrated clients, both in the UK and overseas.  Some of these collections have totalled several GB£million sterling, respectively.  One noteworthy collection, belonging to a Middle Eastern royal family member, comprised approximately 150 unique pieces, the total value of which exceeded US$250million.

On a more personal note, Peter enjoys the Freedom of the City of London, is currently a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Arts & Scholars and has recently applied to become a Liveryman.
